OYES’ after home-school programs provide special arts enrichment classes made available exclusively to Valley Oak Charter School families. Through special arrangement with VOC, all tuition, class, and materials fees are waived. Classes are conveniently located on the Valley Oak Charter Campus. Students perform a showcase of work on the OYES main stage!

Magic Movers and Shakers!

GRADE 1-3

Tuesdays

1:00pm-2:00pm (60 min)

A fun and safe class designed to welcome young students to the wonderful world of theater!  Class will focus on an introduction to performance and story-telling onstage via acting, music and dance.  Memorization required; each semester’s showcase will feature songs and dances as well as scripted acting.  The class will culminate in a short showcase of class-work for friends and family at the end of the Trimester.

SKILLS, SUBJECTS, and LEARNING GOALS

  • Exploration of voice: pitch, volume, mouth shapes and basic pronunciation

  • Memorization: lyrics, simple dance steps

  • Stage presence: facing the audience, The Actor’s Toolkit (body voice imagination), Basic Emotions, Stage Directions (upstage, downstage etc...)

  • Themes: Play/Improvisation/Creation versus Rehearsal and Repetition of learned material.


ACTING STUDIO

GRADE 4-9

Thursdays

1pm-2pm (60 min)

A fun and exciting class designed to introduce new students to theatrical skills, while challenging students already with some experience to advance to the next level.  Class will focus on classic (Shakespeare) as well as modern texts, stage-combat, improvisation, movement skills, and audition strategies.  Each semester will focus on different styles of text and various theatrical skills based on the level and commitment of the students. Instructed by Casey Robbins.

  • Exploration of voice: Character, pitch, volume, mouth shapes and basic pronunciation

  • Memorization: Text, dialogue, staging

  • Stage presence: facing the audience, The Actor’s Toolkit (body voice imagination), Basic Emotions, Stage Directions (upstage, downstage etc...), Stage Combat Combinations,

  • Themes: Play/Improvisation/Creation versus Rehearsal and Repetition of learned material.


Instructed by Casey Robbins. A graduate of San Francisco State University’s Drama Program, Mr. Robbins has worked extensively in the arts of acting, directing, movement, musical composition, improv and playwriting. Casey is an Ojai based performer, director, music director, composer and educator.

Participation Policies

Casting, Rehearsals, Attendance

As  with any group activity, every participant has responsibilities. Please  review the following items to make sure you and your child feel you can honor the commitment to being a part of the program!

ATTENDANCE:

One (1) planned absence is permitted per trimester. Please plan your child’s availability to attend class. Review the program schedule closely.  Make sure your child has little or no conflicts with the class/rehearsal schedule or performance dates. If there are conflicts, please provide the dates in writing to the director BEFORE the  start of the first class. 

CLASS REHEARSALS:

Students are expected to attend all Weekly Camp/Class rehearsals each day scheduled.

PICK UP ON TIME:

We are unable to tend to students beyond the scheduled class times. Parents are required to notify OYES as soon as possible, if they are unable to arrive by end of class time. If a parent has not arrived to pick up their child and cannot be reached by phone within 15 minutes of the end of class, a call will be made to the emergency contact(s) listed on the students enrollment forms.

HOMEWORK:

Students may have some homework for their showcase, including memorizing lines and songs, rehearsing their dance routines.

CASTING:

The production team maintains the privilege of casting the production as  they see fit, and intend to create a well-balanced cast. All participants registered for the program receive a role in the  production. 

CLOSED REHEARSALS:

All OYES rehearsals/classes for all ages are closed, “drop-off” classes. There will be no parent/friend observation or participation in any class at any time. Classes provide final showcases or fully-staged public performances for this purpose.

Parents will receive an email from OYES with a link to register and a “discount” code to waive the tuition fees.


Students are not registered for an after school class until a parent or guardian has completed the OYES online registration and release forms.

Class sizes are limited to 10-12 students.
